Portland, Maine

I had one evening in Portland Maine. The weather was grey wet and generally miserable. I did not let that stop me!

I drove the 2 plus hours up to Portland from Boston in grey sheets of rain, just barely able to make out the last of the fall colors.

Once to Portland, I immediately set out for a walk through historic downtown area to find a place for dinner. Me, my trusty umbrella and my e-reader found a great tavern with a sign that proclaimed Lobsters love Guinness! My kind of place :)

They sat me in a quiet window seat, I had a yummy seasonal pumpkin bear, mussels and of course lobster. It was so yummy and the place was so nice and unpretentious.

This morning I woke up hoping to go for a walk along the water front and watch the sunrise. Well I'm sure the sun did rise but there was so much fog and cloud cover and mist that you could only tell by the gradual lightening of the grayness. Still, it was a nice 2.5 mile walk along the Eastern Promenade Trail in downtown Portland. The trail goes along the waterfront and an old narrow gauge railway. I had a very nice walk and made it back to my hotel just as the skies decided it needed to do a bit more than just mist. Lucky me!

These were cool, parking spots for people's small crafts. Canoes, kayaks, dingys, sculls and surf boards. Like bike parking.

All a bit different from my last beach pictures in Miami!

  1. I visited Portland once years ago but never did get to see many of the sights. Thanks for the tour. The Maine coast is really scenic! Too bad about the sunset and the rain, but you got some good walking in. (Guess your knee brace is doing the trick!)
